CHILDHOOD
There was a time when my family used to live in New Road and this was the place where I was born on March 1st to late J.B. Ale and Kabita Ale. I am the youngest son in my family. I have one elder brother and two elder sisters. My father had a keen interest in business and he was the one who had established Hikola Company here in Nepal. My mom is a folk singer at Radio Nepal.
I have spent my entire childhood in Kathmandu. When I was four years old, my family shifted from New Road to Kuleshor. By the way, most of my early years were spent in the hostel. Initially, I was a very shy person! Till I reached class eight, I used to feel quite akward to even talk to girls. I hardly had any female friends. To sum it all up, I had a very reserved attitude. I don’t know why but I used to kinda get scared of them and didn’t even feel like getting near to them. It was only after returning back from India where I was sent to study that I finally started opening up.
I was admitted at ArnikoBoarding School where I did my studies from nursery to KG. Then on I joined PeaceZoneInternationalSchool where I studied for sometime followed by a stint at SiddharthaVansathaliSchool and then on to Massourie, India where I completed my studies from class seven to eight. Coming back from there I was enrolled at ShephardInternationalSchool from where I received my School Leaving Certificate. I received my plus two certificate from JanMaitriCollege and joined ThamesBusinessCollege to do my O Levels. However, with time, I didn’t feel like completing my education and therefore decided to quit. Again, I joined TriChandraCollege to do bachelors however I never studied.
I have vague memories of my early days but one thing which is still crystal clear is a particular beating which I got while I was in class ten. During that period, I used to stay in a hostel and once had a massive fight in school. They were three of them and I was all alone. Later, those guys were suspended from school. Soon after this, I was suggested by one of my friends to go home as he was scared that the suspended guys would bring back a gang to beat me up. However, I acted as if I was a hero and told him that I was not scared. Very true to what he had anticipated, the guys came back with their friends. They were now 25 and I was alone. My goodness! I got a good thrash then! Meantime, my junior had seen this all and later together with them we ran after those 25! This incident is something, which I still remember.
ENTRY IN THE MUSIC FIELD
I started listening to music while I was studying in class nine. I started playing the guitar and sang english songs along with my friends. However, that one Nepali song which was my personal favorite was “Aaganai Bhari” of Nepathya and I never used to get bored singing it time and again. With time, we started doing cover versions of Guns n Roses and Nirvana. While in class ten, we decided to form a band and that was in 1997 when Dr Pilots was born. During that time we used to participate in school and college functions and never used to miss playing deusi. In 1998, we prepared some songs, however we could not record those since we had no money. That time, Music Nepal used to record songs of artists who had the talent to sing. We also went to Music Nepal with the help of my brother. They listened to our numbers and gave us an opportunity to release our first album – On Air. The first music video from this album “Mansun Mansunko Hawaley” was made with the financial support of my brother. During that time to make one video it used to cost Rs 15,000. However, we had made it at a budget of Rs 45,000. Since this video was made under new means, we can still point some technical problems in the video. When On Air was released we used to form groups within the band and go around music shops selling the album. Many times what we even used to do was, request shopkeepers to keep the album on credit and sell it. Nevertheless, they used to tell us that since they have not heard about the band, they would not keep it in their stores! However, we didn’t give up hope and used to leave at least five audio albums in credit at their place, used to jot down the name of the shops in a piece of paper and come back home. Funny yet true, the band members later lost that paper and we could not even collect money from the shopkeepers.
Later, we released an album ‘Shangrila’ and one of the songs on it titled “Ye Hoi” became an instant hit. This album also introduced Dr Pilots to the Music industry of Nepal. Our third album ‘Sarkari Jagira’ also did pretty well in the maket. By now, we should have released our fourth album and we had even gone on record saying that we would do so in 2006 but we are still not able to since some of the band members are abroad for studies whereas some are busy with their family affairs. Anyways, we are planning to release the album by the end of 2007.
I have also started singing alone and have gone forward with doing remixed numbers as well. “Changba Oi Changba”, “Kanchi Hey Kanchi”and “She is the Bomb” have been quite popular. Starting with 2005, I have got many opportunities to tour abroad and within the country for concerts and programs.
I have not taken any formal musical training. However, when we were doing our second album, I had gone to Sangeet Prawin Narraj Dhakal to learn music and he had asked me if I had learnt classical music. When I said no, he suggested that I learn it from his son. To this, I had told him that I would learn music from him and nobody else. By now, I had still not entered the room…I was stading at the door and he started playing and singing Sa Re Ga Ma on his harmonium and I repeated him by stading in the doorway. It was only after hearing me that he welcomed me inside! It had not even been one and a half months that I had started learning music from him that he fell ill and then on my training was discontinued. Later, along with Raju Lama of the Mongolian Heart, I went to musician Shila Bahadur Moktan’s place to learn music. Every Saturday we used to have sessions with him and the environment in which we learnt music from him was also fine. Later, due to hectic schedules, the classes could not be resumed. I feel, that an artist should have at least a decent knowledge regarding classical music.
I have also done a playback song in a movie titled ‘Papi Manche’. Nonetheless, I prefer singing pop numbers because of its demand today. This must be the reason why we have so many pop singers these days. The good thing is also that these days parents also motivate and support their children as far as music is concerned. This concept was not there when we started. People who used to play the guitar and sing songs were not considered good then!
ME/MYSELF
I think I am a lazybone! I have this habit of sleeping long hours, which is bad and I am not at all punctual. Because of this attitude many of my friends get dissappointed with me. Knowing full well that this is a bad habit, I have not been able to change it! I hardly get angry over matters. I hate violence. I love animalas and like to keep dogs, cats and fishes as pets. I am also very health conscious but do not follow regimes and that is why I often fall ill.
LOVE AND MARRIAGE
When one has fallen in love the world seems so very beautiful and you like everything that is going on and your surroundings. On the other hand, for those who have faced tragedy it is just the other way round. I feel that in love there should be understanding as well as compromise at the same time.
If two people fall in love and want to spend the rest of their lives together they should go for marriage.
I was very faithful while I was in love. I had made up my mind to marry her one day. Nevertheless, when there is a misunderstanding, it becomes a bit difficult to move on and because of this we parted our ways. We are still friends and we still hang out together but the relationship that we now share is not like what it used to be. After that, I have not yet found anybody to seriously go steady with.
At times, I do think about marriage and whenever I am out the news that goes around is that I have settled down. My band members have been married and I do wish the same to happen to me but I am planning to wait for at least two to four years before I decide on it
